PMI also supports intermittent preventive treatment in Africa to prevent malaria in pregnant women. Twenty-one-year-old Lake Konsi rested in the maternity ward at the main referral hospital in Gulu district in northern Uganda. Eight months pregnant, she was diagnosed with severe malaria. She lives in an IDP camp and was referred here by the camp’s antenatal care clinic when she experienced a high fever and chest pains. PMI has trained health workers at this hospital and throughout other districts in Uganda on giving and supervising medicines to prevent malaria in pregnant women. |
