Malaria prevention and control are major foreign assistance objectives of the U.S. Government. In May 2009, President Barack Obama unveiled the Global Health Initiative (GHI), a six-year, comprehensive effort to reduce the burden of disease and promote healthy communities and families around the world. Through the GHI, the United States will invest $63 billion over six years to help partner countries improve health outcomes, with a particular focus on improving the health of women, newborns, and children.
Since its launch in 2005, PMI has reinforced the principles that are part of the GHI, including:
- Encourage country ownership and invest in country-led plans
- Increase impact through strategic coordination and integration
- Build sustainability through health systems strengthening
- Improve metrics and monitoring and evaluation
- Implement a woman-centered approach
- Strengthen and leverage key multilateral organizations, global health partnerships, and private sector engagement
PMI Five-Year Evaluation
A comprehensive external evaluation is planned for PMI; it will be conducted between 2011 and mid-2012, when most FY 2010-funded activities will have been implemented.
