Substandard Antimalarial Medicines Highlight the Need for Health Care Reform in African Countries
Substandard antimalarial medicines are still sold widely in Madagascar, Senegal, and Uganda, according to a recently published study by United States Pharmacopeia, in partnership with USAID and WHO. The study covered 10 countries but focused on Madagascar, Senegal, and Uganda. Veerle Coignez, pharmaceutical management advisor for USAID explained: "With this study we are hoping that it will lead to targeted actions based on the samples that were found to be substandard. But beyond that, it will help keep the momentum going to improve the medicines quality assurance systems."

PMI supports behavior change and social mobilization programs in all 15 focus countries. Activities include training of health and community workers, religious leaders, and journalists in behavior change and social mobilization and interpersonal communication. Implementation of these activities occurs at various locations, including clinics, homes, religious institutions, schools, and community events.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Monitoring and evaluation are needed to measure the progress and effectiveness of health programs at all levels. PMI monitors and evaluates the coverage of the four interventions and their impact on under-five mortality.
